Independence for Papua New Guinea took place in September 1975, when Australia formally handed over government of the country to the Parliament of PNG. The ceremony was held over three days - Children's Day (13th Sep), Sports Day (14th Sep), and Official Ceremonial Day (15th Sep). Here a girl from one of the dance troupes from Sogeri High School, PNG's premier secondary school, shows facial painting typical of her Mekeo ancestors. Mekeos are a tribe from beach and rainforest areas on the coast lowlands west of Port Moresby. They are known for the bright 'sing-sing bilas' (dance costumes).
