Flower of the Pink Orchid Tree, Brisbane Australia.   //   Pink Orchid Tree - Fabaceae: Bauhinia variegata. Height to 12m, canopy to 10m diameter, DBH 1.5m. Leaves bi-lobed, roughly circular in shape. Originally found in south-east Asia, southern China, India and Pakistan, now widely cultivated as an ornamental tre in streets, parks and gardens in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. Pod is typical shape of the pea-plants - but large, to 30cm length x 5cm width. Also known as Camel's-foot Tree (for the shape of the leaves), Mountain Ebony and Orchid Tree. A white-flowered variety is less common than the pink-flowered variety.
